What ‘suspected’ means and who may be at higher risk
A ‘‘suspected’’ finding is an indicator that further assessment is needed, not a diagnosis. It may come from a physical exam (a palpable neck lump) or from imaging such as ultrasound. Factors that increase the likelihood a nodule will be investigated further include prior exposure to significant neck radiation, a family history of thyroid cancer, and certain inherited conditions. Most nodules are benign; suspicion guides the decision to pursue more tests.
