Common and age-specific warning signs
Symptoms can differ between infants, toddlers and older children. School-age children often show high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea or vomiting, and sensitivity to light. Infants and young children may have less specific signs such as irritability, prolonged crying, poor feeding, drowsiness or unusual sleepiness, or conversely inconsolable agitation. Seizures, sudden changes in consciousness, or a rash that does not fade under gentle pressure (petechiae/purpura) are red flags that need immediate evaluation.
