What the macula does and how degeneration develops
The macula is a tiny but vital part of the retina responsible for detailed vision and color. Degeneration occurs when retinal cells and supporting tissue change, or when deposits (drusen) build up, reducing macular function. The condition may progress slowly in some people and more rapidly in others, so periodic eye examinations are important to monitor changes early.
