What it is and common causes
Iron deficiency anemia develops when iron intake, absorption or losses are not balanced with the body’s needs. Common causes include chronic blood loss (for example gastrointestinal bleeding or heavy menstrual bleeding), insufficient dietary iron, increased iron requirements (pregnancy, growth periods), and disorders that reduce iron absorption. Past surgeries or some chronic illnesses can also contribute.
