What is a hypertensive emergency?
A hypertensive emergency is a sudden and severe rise in blood pressure accompanied by signs of acute injury or dysfunction in target organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys or eyes. By definition, there must be evidence suggesting organ involvement; high blood pressure alone without these findings is not classified as a hypertensive emergency.
