What it is — irritant versus allergic
Contact dermatitis covers two main mechanisms. Irritant contact dermatitis results from direct damage to the skin barrier by chemicals, repeated friction or prolonged wet work. Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed immune response that develops after sensitisation to a specific substance. Both can look similar, so the exposure history helps to distinguish them.
