What AKI is and typical triggers
AKI happens when the kidneys suddenly become less able to remove waste and balance fluids. Common triggers include large fluid losses or low blood pressure, severe infections (sepsis), major surgery, urinary tract obstruction and effects of certain medications. Clinically AKI is grouped by mechanism: pre-renal (reduced blood flow to the kidneys), intrinsic renal (direct damage to kidney tissue) and post-renal (obstruction of urine flow).
